Verizon reports that it activated 7.2 million smartphones in their first fiscal quarter, and the iPhone accounted for more than half, with 4 million total Apple devices activated in the period.
In a conference call revealing its quarterly earnings on Thursday, Verizon revealed that roughly half of the 4 million iPhone units activated were 4G LTE devices. Since the iPhone 5 is the only 4G LTE capable phone from Apple, that means Verizon activated about 2 million iPhone 5 units.
The 55% share of Verizon activations in the quarter was down from the nearly two-thirds share of activations the iPhone grabbed in the previous holiday quarter. It was to be expected though, as the previous quarter saw the launch of the iPhone 5, in addition to price-cuts for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5’s piece of the Verizon iPhone activation pie remained unchanged, as it took about half of the iPhone activations at the carrier.
In the face of concern that Apple’s handsets are losing steam against competitors such as Samsung, this latest data shows that the iPhone still accounts for more than half of all smartphone sales at the two largest carriers in the U.S. Last quarter, the iPhone represented 84% of all smartphone activations at Verizon competitor AT&T.
Verizon reported earnings of 68 cents per share on revenue of $29.4 billion in the quarter, showing a 15% year over year growth. Of 7.2 million smartphones activated in the quarter, 5.9 million of those were 4G LTE devices.
