In what is perhaps the most concrete evidence so far that the new Macs will have 802.11ac WiFi, a snippet of code from the latest OS X 10.8.4 beta has been unearthed by 9to5Mac, indicating just that. The code was found in the WiFi frameworks folder, and isn’t present on 10.8.3, so this a recent addition to the OS.
A deal with Broadcom was mentioned in January to provide 802.11ac chips for the new Macs, so Apple readying the OS for faster WiFi is absolutely no surprise. 802.11ac is faster, more robust and offers greater range than the current 802.11n, and the industry as a whole is slowly making the switch – there are already some nice 802.11c routers available on the market.
Faster WiFi in Macs also means there will likely be new Airport routers from Apple soon – and I’m due for a new one! How convenient!
