This doesn’t really surprise me, as it seems to be a growing trend, but it seems that two iPod nano wrist straps – Scott Wilson’s LunaTIK and TikTok Kickstarter-funded projects – will soon be sold in the Apple Retail Stores.
Wilson was not the first to develop wrist straps like this, with Griffin beating him to market, but he appears to be having great success, and it looks like he wasn’t joking when he said his Kickstarter campaign raised a million dollars.
In an interview with FastcoDesign, Wilsom commented on the development:
A lot of people just don’t have the instincts to know whether it’s going to sell, so they just don’t want to gamble. But to see it globally accepted across 50 countries, that’s not much of a risk. I bounced it off of different contacts at different retail channels, and they all decided that it needed to be in that 34.95 to 35.95 sweet spot.
Apple will reportedly start carrying the watchbands in their retail stores later this week. The fancier of the two, called the LunaTik (in silver and red) will retail for $79.95, while its more affordable counterpart, the TikTok, will be sold for half that, at $39.95. According to a survey conducted by Wilson, more than three quarters of iPod nano buyers purchased the Nano for just this reason – to wear as a watch.
As a reminder, it was Steve Jobs that set the watchband idea into motion with an off comment at last year’s September iPod event. It’s likely that he was quite unaware of the impact that his seemingly joking comment would have. You can check out that footage in the below video.
Note: Likely due to a mass influx of traffic, Lunatik’s website is currently down, as per the time of this posting.
