A new security flaw has been discovered in iOS 6.1 which allows anyone to bypass the passcode lock on an iPhone running iOS 6.1 and access the phone’s contacts, voicemail, and photos.
The method for bypassing the lock screen was documented in a handy video by the folks over at the Verge (above). It involves making — and then immediately canceling — an emergency call and holding down the power button a couple of times during the process.
By exactly following the steps in the video, anyone can view and modify your phone’s contacts, listen to voicemail, and by attempting to add a photo to a contact, browse your photos.
Bugs such as this one have appeared in previous versions of iOS, and Apple has usually moved quickly to develop fixes once it becomes aware of the issues.
