Everyone knows that Apple’s iOS-based devices are extremely popular, but this is just crazy: According to analysts, older generations of Apple’s most popular products (mostly iPhones and iPads) continue to consistently outsell new Android devices.
I can just imagine the tremendous gloating occurring in Cupertino today as this report is unveiled. Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley, who originated the report, has the following to say:
Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products…We believe this highlights Apple’s significant competitive advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels.
Helping Apple’s older products in topping newer competing products is the company’s practice of significantly reducing the price of previous generation models when refreshed counterparts are introduced.
Despite many people’s tendency to run out and buy the newest and latest Apple products on a consistent bases, there nevertheless remains a very large market for consumers purchasing and using older generations. Walkey also said, however, that Apple’s iOS ecosystem will lead to a stronger replacement sales cycle as well.
