DigiTimes, the sometimes we’re right, and sometimes we’re WAY off tech industry publication, says Samsung is looking at putting off construction of a new fabrication facility. It seems they’re expecting to lose some future chip orders from their old frenemy Apple.
The publication reports that Samsung is likely to delay construction of their new logic fabrication facility, Line-17, in Hwaseong, a city in the Gyeonggi Province of South Korea. Samsung’s primary concern over the construction is the “possibility of losing a portion of orders for Apple’s next-generation application chips.”
As it appears that Samsung will no longer be the sole supplier of Apple-designed chips for the iPhone and iPad lineups, the expected drop in orders is prompting Samsung to take a second-look at its planned expansion of it logic-IC capacity expansion.
A report in October said that Apple was becoming more serious about moving chip production away from Samsung.
