In a press release issued this morning, Apple’s Phil Schiller announced that the iPhone 5 generated over 2 million pre-orders within the first 24 hours of availability – a new all-time record for an iPhone launch!

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” Schiller said. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.” […]

Pre-orders for the iPhone sold out on Apple’s website in less than an hour, and sold out at AT&T and Verizon’s sites in less than 12 hours. Apple released a statement on Friday saying they were “blown away” by the pre-order response.
