In yet another interesting tidbit from the Apple vs. Samsung trial, an internal Apple email (pictured below via CNET) apparently shows that Eddy Cue (Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services) was pushing for Apple to release a smaller iPad as early as 2011.
The email was addressed to Apple SVP Scott Forstall, as well as Tim Cook and Phil Schiller, stating that he geld there was a market for a 7-inch iPad, and that Apple “should do one.” Interestingly, the email also notes that the matter had been discussed with Steve Jobs, and that he seemed open to the idea!
As noted by AllThingsD, the email was in response to a GigaOM article explaining why he switched from the iPad to a 7-inch tablet, arguing that the smaller device was far more portable and easier to use and carry on the go.
It’s well-known that Steve Jobs was publicly open in his apparent dislike of smaller tablets, famously claiming that users would have to said their fingers down to use one. However, it’s also well-known that Steve Jobs often publicly spoke out against products or ideas even if Apple was actually working on one!
The revelation is especially interesting in light of the many recent rumors, and concensus among reliable sources such as Bloomberg, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that Apple is indeed planning to release an iPad mini sometime this fall.
