Reuters Confirms Smaller Dock Connector for Next-Gen iPhone

Reuters this morning confirmed long-standing rumors that Apple’s next-gen iPhone will indeed feature a smaller 19-pin dock connector rather than the large 30-pin dock connector that the company has used in its products since the third-gen iPod was released.

From Reuters

The iPhone 5, Apple’s next generation iPhone expected to go on sale around October, will come with a 19-pin connector port at the bottom instead of the proprietary 30-pin port “to make room for the earphone moving to the bottom”, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

iMore was the first major source to report  that the next iPhone would feature a smaller dock connector, and the rumor has spiraled forward since then, being backed up by a number of typically credible sources.

The report also notes that the headphone jack in the next-gen iPhone will me relocated to the bottom of the device – something which has been backed up by numerous part leaks, schematics, and reports as well.

If true, accessory manufacturers are faced with an incredible opportunity as users rush to purchase new docks and accessories that will work with the smaller connector. It also seems likely that adapters (whether from Apple or a third party) will likely become available as well.
