While the iPhone 3GS may already seem antiquated for a lot of people (certainly not me, I still use one), it might get a completely new lease of life in the prepaid and developing markets, Forbes reports. You can already get an iPhone 3GS for free on a two year contract, however Jefferies analyst Peter Misek believes that Apple will go further, repricing the phone from $375 wholesale to around $200-250.
Misek claims that Apple has already signed an agreement with a ‘global distributor’ to enter the prepaid and developing markets, so it’s something that we could be seeing sooner rather than later.
The iPhone is generally seen as a pricey piece of equipment, but with a price cut as considerable as Misek estimates, we could see a new wave of Apple customers from more economically deprived countries like India arrive, which would only contribute further to the Apple economic phenomenon.
It’s also important to remember that the iPhone 3GS can still run the latest iOS software and apps, so in that regard it’s by no means out dated even if the release of iOS 6 and a possible new iPhone might put that in jeopardy.
