VLC, the mother of all open source video players, has just passed the huge 1 billion downloads landmark, with a hundred million of those downloads for the Mac version.
The stats were started in February 2005, and even though VLC claim they are probably inaccurate, they still give a rough idea of the number, and with exactly 1,002,343,202 downloads recorded, you can assume that they have officially gone over a billion.
While Windows dominated the stats with 895,744,483 downloads, OS X still had a sizeable chunk with 103,050,708, so it wasn’t a complete Windows download frenzy.
I for one love VLC and I use it all the time to read video formats that can’t be read by most other software. It’s got to be ranked as one of the most useful applications of all time, and the one billion downloads is a testament to just how good it is.
