The iPad 2 is quickly sweeping the world, proving its once-questioned worth to an eager world. One of the possibilities that devices like the iPad open up is augmented reality – a neat image-based technology allowing cool things like the Star Walk app, which gives you a visual guide to the stars.
Vito Technologies has just unleashed an Augmented Reality equipped version of their star-watching app Star Walk ($5, App Store). It’s simple to use – just hold the screen up to the sky, and the app will superimpose constellations and all sorts of other information into a real-time image of the sky, all being viewed through the iPad 2 camera. It also features neat extras like a satellite tracker, night mode, and a time-machine function that can show you how the sky looks on any given day or time.
While I’m not sure that a back-lit screen, such as on the iPad, is really conducive to stargazing, or whether the iPad 2 camera is up to night-based tasks, this could still ultimately be a really fun experience. Also, for those of you without an iPad 2, there is also an iPhone version that comprises many of the same features for just a buck ($0.99, App Store)
