The iPhone Dev Team has already updated their Redsn0w jailbreaking tool to support iOS 5.1, less than 24 hours after its release (at the time of their original posting). The jailbreak doesn’t work on the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, however, and is a tethered jailbreak, meaning you need to connect your device to a computer and boot it using Redsn0w every time it is turned off or restarted.
Redmond Pie offers a few useful bits of information about the jailbreak:
- As already mentioned, this jailbreak does not work on the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S.
- If you unlock with GEVEY or Ultrasn0w, DO NOT update to the stock iOS 5.1 firmware. Skip to the latter part of this guide for more info.
- You will be booting tethered quite a bit, so if you don’t think you can deal with constantly connecting and rebooting, wait for an untethered or downgrade to iOS 5.0.1/4.x.
There’s also a full tutorial on how to use the jailbreak at the original post. If you have a previous generation iOS device and are OK with a tethered jailbreak, head on over to the iPhone Dev Team blog and get downloading!
