YouTube Enhances HTML5 Player, Begins to Move Away from Flash

Google has added some significant improvements to YouTube’s HTML5 player, reports The Verge adding a number of new features such as 1080p support, fullscreen playback, and closed captioning.

These changes make YouTube’s HTML 5 player increasingly able to compete with the Flash version of its service. Meanwhile, Google has only been making minor, performance-optimizing changes to their Flash player, suggesting that the company is continually looking to move away from Flash for the future of YouTube.

Currently, Flash is required to take advantage of all YouTube features, but with the HTML5 player continually approving, I sort of wonder how long they’ll hang on to Flash.
