Following previous rumors of a Retina display being produced for the iPad 3, and a new dual-LED light bar system for the higher-resolution display, a new report from DigiTimes claims that Apple has suppliers working on two different iPad 3 prototypes to investigate different methods of backlighting.
The two prototypes, named J1 and J2, are already reportedly being given to Apple’s upstream partners for development. The major differences in these new iPad prototypes over previous versions are size, technical specs, and the technologies they use.
Due to the higher resolution on these next-gen iPads, Apple has reportedly insisted on a dual-LED light bar system, which lines up with a recent iLounge report that the iPad 3 will be slightly thicker than the iPad 2.
Update: New code strings have been discovered in iOS 5 showing the J2 codename, adding credibility to this report.
Update 2: A new report by DisplaySearch claims that iPad 3 retina displays are already in production, backing up a previous rumor from DigiTimes.
