While benchmarks for the new iPhone 4S have shown dramatic speed and performance increases, a series of benchmark tests performed by AppleInsider suggests that iOS 5 might bring significant speed and performance increases to existing iOS devices as well.
Recent benchmarks scoring popular smartphone models have shown the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 as reaching a score of 31,375 in Rightware’s BrowserMark testing suite, which evaluates the efficiency of a system’s web browser.
What’s interesting, however, is that tests measuring the iPhone 4’s performance while running iOS 5 score significantly higher. An iPhone 4 running through the same benchmark tests with iOS 5 installed was able to achieve a score of 51,302.
While these results don’t necessarily indicate that iOS 5 will improve performance across the board, they certainly indicate that internet and browser-related performance are significantly improved with iOS 5.
The iPhone 4S achieves an impressive score of 89,567 using the same tests, showing that it’s nearly twice as fast as its predecessor.
