AT&T will soon create a new tier of device in their phone database, reports 9to5Mac, requiring customers to pay a higher rate to get the devices insured. The new tier will come into effect on October 4th, the same day Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 5, which is especially interesting considering that AT&T all but confirmed October 4th as the iPhone’s release date back in July.
The information comes via a leaked internal AT&T document, pictured above (click to expand), although details about the October 4th change date are also reflected on AT&T’s publicly available insurance site.
It’s also curious that the leaked document specifically mentions the iPhone, but does not specifically mention any other devices, potentially signaling that AT&T is directly targeting the iPhone 5 with this increase.
