Apple has announced that as of next month, backing up your iPhone or iPad to iCloud will require that the device is running iOS 9 or later. Apple has informed some customers via email that new backups on devices running iOS 8 and earlier will no longer offer iCloud backups. All of those existing backups currently being stored in iCloud will also be deleted.
Apps and data on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 8 or earlier remain unaffected. Customers will still be able to locally backup their devices to a Mac or Windows PC.

The iCloud backup changes will go into effect on December 18,2024, so users running iOS 8 or earlier on their devices should update to the latest version od iOS available for their device to continue to backup to iCloud.
Apple says it is turning off iCloud backups for devices running older versions of iOS to “more closely align” with Apple’s “published minimum software requirements.”
