Apple industry analyst Jeff Pu said he agrees with a recent rumor claiming that the 2025 “iPhone 17 Air” will be around 6mm thick. Pu’s comments came in a research note with Hong Kong-based investment bank Haitong on Monday.
“We agreed with the recent chatter of an 6mm thickness ultra-slim design of the iPhone 17 Slim model,” he wrote.
If Pu’s prediction comes true, the “iPhone 17 Air” (Pu refers to it as the “iPhone 17 Slim”) would take the spot as the thinnest iPhone ever. 6mm thick would easily be thinner that the current thinnest iPhone, the 6.9mm thick iPhone 6.
While we’d all love to see an even thinner iPhone, components like the battery have a limit as to how thin the device can go.
While a 6mm iPhone 7 Air would be the thinnest iPhone ever, it would not be Apple thinnest device ever. The 2024 13-inch iPad Pro hold the spot as thinnest-ever, as it is measures in at just 5.1mm thick (thin). The last iPhone nano was just 5.4mm thick.
Several credible rumors have indicated that Apple is planning a significantly thinner iPhone 17 model that most refer to as the “iPhone 17 Air.” (Well, except for Pu, who calls it the “iPhone 17 Slim.”)
As you might expect, there have been conflicting rumors floating around the rumor bowl, but most rumormongers agree that the new iPhone will boast a 6.6-inch display, be powered by an A19 chip, a Dynamic Island, a single rear-facing camera, and an Apple-produced 5G modem. The new iPhone 17 Air is also said to be equipped with 8GB or RAM for Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone 17 Air will likely debut in September 2025, so we have quite a few months and quite a few rumors ahead of us.
