Apple earlier this week alongside the launch of its new M4-powered Macs also debuted USB-C versions of its Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Keyboard, as the Cupertino firm continues to phase out Lightning port versions of the Mac accessories. While this should be a welcome update for many users, please be aware that there are some software-based “gotchas” when it comes to the new accessories.
As first reported by MacRumors, all three new USB-C accessories require macOS Sequoia 15.1 to work properly. The publication says users on its forums say earlier versions of macOS do not work with the accessories. Users who are still running macOS Sonoma and Ventura on their Macs are having issues with the new devices. On the Magic Keyboard, Touch ID and function keys do not work, and the Magic Mouse’s scrolling feature doesn’t work. Some users say the accessories are apparently recognized as older devices, meaning proper functionality isn’t allowed.
The issues aren’t limited to Macs running older versions of macOS though, as developers that have installed the initial macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta have found that the accessories do not work properly on their Macs. It seems that Apple didn’t have time to add in the special sauce for the new Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad before 15.2 was released.
At least for now, if you want to use the USB-C Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad with your Mac, you’ll need to be running macOS Sequoia 15.1. So, you’ll either need to update your older version of macOS to Sequoia 15.1, or wait for support to be added to the macOS Sequoia 15.2 beta in a future seed.
