At least some of the features in Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 will be powered by data centers using Apple Silicon chips, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The servers will use Apple’s own M2 Ultra chips to power some of the most advanced AI features it plans for iOS 18 and beyond. Apple has reportedly put the pedal to the metal in response to the popularity of Artificial Intelligence products like Chat GPT. The servers could eventually be upgraded to use M4 processors, which debuted earlier this week, in Apple’s new iPad Pro models.
While some AI tasks will be performed on-device, more intensive AI tasks, such as generating images and such will be handled in the cloud. If Apple debuts a more powerful version of Siri, cloud-based servers would be a must. Apple has long worked to protect users’ privacy and Apple’s servers will be no exception.
Apple plans to use in-house servers for now, but in the future, it may also contract to use servers from other companies.
