Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman today reported that Apple has no plans to unveil its own generative AI chatbot in its next major software updates, including iOS 18 for the iPhone.
Gurman instead repeated his previous claims that Apple has discussed potential generative AI partnerships with multiple companies, including Google, OpenAI, and Baidu.
Gurman does expect Artificial Intelligence to be a major focus at Apple’s just-announced WWDC 24 developers conference, saying Apple plans to announce new AI features that “assist users in their daily lives,” but he did not provide any specific details about the features.
Gurman has previously commented that Apple is working to use generative AI to improve Siri’s ability to answer more complex inquiries, while also allowing the Messages app to auto-complete sentences.
Apple is also rumored to be working to bring deeper AI integrations to iOS 18’s built-in apps, including Health, Messages, Numbers, Pages, Shortcuts, and other apps. Apple may also bring AI-powered features to Apple Music and Keynote that would allow users to automatically generate playlists.
On Apple’s February earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the Cupertino firm was working on generative AI and would share details “later this year.”
Apple will likely make the first beta of iOS 18 available to developers immediately following the June 10 WWDC keynote. The update will likely be released to the public in September.
