iEmu, a new Kickstarter project from Chris Wade (one of the original iPhone jailbreakers), aims to develop a fully-functioning emulator that will run iOS applications on Android, Mac and Windows devices.
If the project turns out to be possible and doesn’t get smashed by Apple’s legal team, this might be one of the coolest Kickstarter projects ever. The project is being built on top of the open-source QEMU emulator, but (at least according to TechCrunch) the project is not going to be easy by any stretch.
In order to succeed, the team will need to come up with a way to emulate the A4 chip inside the iPhone 4, as well as possibly the A5 chip inside the iPad 2 and future iPhone 5. They’ll also need to emulate all of the multi-touch, USB, graphics, memory and other hardware and software components of iOS and the devices that run it.
If Wade and his team are able to raise the $20,000, and also manage to figure out how to emulate all of the many components necessary to make the emulator work, they will still face an uphill battle, especially if Apple’s legal team takes issue.
