Google Maps developers are continuing to work on integrating Live Activities support for iPhones, according to a report from MacRumors. The publication says new assets in the latest version of the app show that work continues on the long-promised feature.
Google in February 2023 announced that it would add support for Live Activities in its Google Maps app in the coming months, offering turn-by-turn directions both on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island on Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. (The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are the current flagship iPhone devices.)
The Live Activities feature will allow users to receive real-time ETAs and directions for driving, biking, walking, public transit, and other forms of navigation via Google Maps, without having to unlock their iPhone and open the app.
Live Activities also integrates with the Dynamic Island on iPhone 15 Pro models, providing at-a-glance information at the top of the screen. Users can long-press the Dynamic Island to open an expanded view with additional information.
Apple opened up its Live Activities API to third-party iPhone apps with the release of iOS 16.1, allowing third-party developers to make use of the feature.
