Apple on Thursday confirmed that it will permanently close its Infinite Loop retail store in Cupertino, California on January 20. Apple occupied the Infinite Loop facility from the mid-1990s to 2017, when the company opened its current Apple Park headquarters.
Allo store employees will be allowed to continue working for the company. As reported by MacRumors, at least some employees will be allowed to relocate to nearby retail stores, including the Apple Park Visitor Center and Apple Valley Fair.
“After many years of serving customers at our stores in the Bay Area, we plan to close our store at Infinite Loop,” an Apple spokesperson said, in a statement shared with MacRumors. “All of our valued team members will have the opportunity to continue their roles with Apple. We look forward to welcoming our customers at our nearby Apple Park Visitor Center and other locations, on Apple.com, and the Apple Store app.”
Apple is also permanently closing its Royal Hawaiian store in Honolulu on January 20.
The company said it regularly evaluates its retail footprint to ensure it is in the best possible position to provide support for its customers. And it has determined it’s time to close this particular location.
The 57 full and part-time employees are being offered positions at two Honolulu Apple stores.
Apple customers can still visit the brand’s Ala Moana location.
The offices at the Infinite Loop campus will continue to be occupied by Apple corporate employees, as only the store closing. The main building’s atrium is under construction until early 2024, according to a sign posted outside the entrance.
The Infinite Loop store first opened with the moniker of “The Company Store” and focused mostly on selling Apple-branded merchandise. After it was renovated in 2015. it reopened as a more traditional sort of Apple retail location, selling Apple products and devices, such as the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Macs. The location also continued selling a limited amount of Apple-branded merchandise, including mugs, t-shirts notebooks, and other souvenir-ish items. As one of Apple’s smaller retail locations, the Infinite Loop location does not offer “Today at Apple” sessions or offer Genius Bar appointments.
A different collection of Apple-branded merchandise will remain available for purchase at the Apple Park Visitor Center, and the location will also continue to serve as a traditional Apple retail store.
