Apple is rolling out a new version of its AirTag firmware. The refreshed firmware has a build number of 2A61, up from 2A36. While there is no way to force your AirTag to update its firmware, there is a way to see if it has been updated to the latest version.
Today’s firmware release will be rolling out on a staggered basis. One percent of users will get the update today, and then it will expand to 10% of users on November 7. On November 14, an additional 25% of users will see the update, and then it will be available to all on November 28.
AirTag firmware updates install automatically when an AirTag is in range of your iPhone. The process is similar to how Apple updates the firmware of its AirPods lineup.
Checking your AirTag firmware version is a bit roundabout.
- Open the Find My application on your iPhone.
- Tap the Items tab in the bottom navigation bar.
- Select your AirTag from the list of displayed items by tapping on the name of the AirTag.
- Your AirTag’s serial number and firmware version should be displayed.
