A report by The Elec says Apple supply partner BOE has been contracted to supply the OLED panels for Apple’s much-rumored fourth-generation iPhone SE. The new iPhone SE is widely expected to debut sometime in 2024.
It was reported last week that China-based BOE was having issues in properly producing OLED displays for the upcoming iPhone 15, which will feature the Dynamic Island feature that debuted with this year’s iPhone 14 “Pro” models. BOE is having issues with light leaking around the section of the OLED display where the pill and hole cutouts are. The two provide the space required for the TrueDepth camera and Face ID components
BOE appears to be making up at least some of that lost revenue by producing OLED panels for the iPhone SE 4. The required volume of OLED panels for the iPhone SE 4 is expected to be around 20 million next year.
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to use the same OLED specifications originally put in place for 2021’s iPhone 13 or 2022’s iPhone 14. “It makes sense for Apple to optimize by leveraging component inventory, as it is an entry-level product,” adds the Korean report.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14, which features a 6.1-inch OLED display with thinner bezels. The current iPhone SE boasts a 4.7-inch LCD display with thicker bezels.
