Dropbox has begun testing a new version of its Mac app, offering native support for Apple Silicon for the first time. The file storage firm had been criticized by customers and users who were led to believe that Dropbox had no plans to offer native M1 Mac support.
Dropbox executive responses to comments on Dropbox forums suggested that Dropbox was not planning to add support for Apple silicon Macs to its Mac app, continuing to rely on Apple’s Rosetta 2 technology to run the Intel-based app on newer Mac machines.
However, after the widespread criticism from Mac users, the company’s CEO was quoted as saying Dropbox would offer native Apple Silicon support in the first half of 2022.
Dropbox has told MacRumors that it has begun testing native Apple silicon support with a small batch of its Mac user base. The company plans to offer native Apple Silicon support to all users who run the beta of its Mac app by the end of January.
Intel-based apps on new M1 Macs run a bit slower in many instances, as older apps do not include the optimizations for Apple Silicon’s performance improvements and power efficiency.
