Photos Show Black Ceramic Apple Watch Edition Series 5 Prototype

Newly-shared images show that Apple considered making a black version of its ceramic Apple Watch Edition Series 5 wearable.

The images, shared on Twitter by the prototype collector “Mr. White,” shows off a black ceramic version of the Series 5 casing, alongside the manufactured white ceramic version.

Apple’s ceramic Apple Watch Edition Series 5 was only available in a glossy white finish, and a black ceramic version was never made available for sale. The high-end ceramic white Apple Watch Edition started at $1,249.

Apple promoted the ceramic casing as strong, light, and scratch-resistant, being four times as hard as the stainless steel finish. The “pearly, lustrous finish” was hardily resistant to scratches and tarnishing.

Apple first offered the ceramic Apple Watch Edition with the release of the Series 2, and also offered a gray ceramic option with the release of the Series 3. No ceramic version was available for Series 4, but returned for Series 5. No ceramic Apple Watch Series 6 was made available. Instead, Apple offers an Edition model with a cheaper titanium casing.
