A new DigiTimes report on Thursday jibes with previous comments by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that Apple this year will begin transitioning its devices to mini-LED technology. Kuo believes a new mini-LED MacBook Air will hit shelves in 2022.
Kuo expects Apple to release redesigned iPad Pro models and MacBook Pro models in 2021, all sporting mini-LED displays and Apple Silicon chips. DigiTimes, citing its supply chain sources, agrees with Kuo, saying:
The sources expect that Apple’s 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros and 16-inch MacBook Pro set to be released in 2021 will be equipped with miniLED displays and adoption of miniLED will be expanded to its MacBook Air products in 2022.
Mini-LED displays will offer increased brightness, improved contrast, richer colors, and more, over the current display technology used in the above products.
Kuo has also said that he expects to see Apple launch a new 14-inch MacBook Pro with an all-new design during the late second quarter or third quarter of 2021.
MacBook Pro models are expected to be the main driver of increased mini-LED shipments, as they will benefit from the move to mini-LED displays before the iPad and will have faster shipment growth.
Kuo sees MacBook shipments growing by 100% over the next three years, thanks to Apple’s new designs and the adoption of Apple Silicon in those new models.
