As the COVID-19 vaccine begins to roll out to citizens in the United States, Los Angeles County had provided a way to allow its residents to show proof that they have been vaccinated. LA citizens that have been vaccinated can now add proof to the Apple Wallet app, as well as in Google Pay for Passes.
Bloomberg reports the integration is available due to a partnership between Los Angeles County and the startup Healthvana, which specializes in delivering test results to patients for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. The company now does the same for COVID-19 test results.
While the virtual ticket was originally intended to remind vaccine recipients of the need for a second dose of the vaccine, it also certifies when a person has received the second dose. This acts as proof that the COVID-19 vaccine has been received.
For those who do not have access to an iPhone or Android smartphone, paper cards are still available to track the vaccines folks have received.
As for any privacy concerns that may arise, Healthvana says that the company stores everything as securely as possible on Amazon Web Services servers that are in accordance with HIPAA.
