Korean website The Elec today claimed that Apple not only has plans to release at least one iPad Pro boasting a Mini-LED display in the first half of 2021 but will also release new iPad Pro models featuring OLED displays in the second half of the year.
While the Mini-LED display iPad Pro had already been widely rumored, the bit about the OLED display iPad Pro is a bit of a changeup. Samsung and LG are already working on developing the OLED displays for the iPad Pro, says The Elec report.
Samsung Display and LG Display, which currently supplies OLED panels for iPhones, were currently developing the new OLED panel for the new tablets that will likely launch in the second half of 2021.
Samsung Display was renovating one of its production line at its A4 factory in Asan to produce the OLED screens for the iPad. The company was adding adding a distribution chamber to the organic material deposition chamber to deposit red, green and blue in tandem. This will allow the firm to deposit one layer of RGB, send the substrate back to the front of the production line, and stack an emitting layer atop it.
Tandem structure allows two to three emitting layers to be stacked __ this is done to extend the life of the emitting layer compared to using just one layer.
Mini-LED and OLED displays both hold advantages over traditional LCDs, including higher brightness, improved contrast ratio, and increased power efficiency. Apple currently uses OLED technology in the iPhone 12 lineup and the Apple Watch.
The iPad Pro was last updated in March 2020. The minor update consisted of a new A12Z Bionic chip, an Ultra-Wide camera, a LiDAR Scanner, and an improved microphone.
