Apple has officially announced this year’s September special event, inviting members of the press and the public to tune in to watch the virtual event on September 15 at 10 am Pacific Time. Apple is expected to unveil all-new hardware including a new iPad Air and the new Apple Watch Series 6 lineup.
While it was initially believed that the September event would headline the iPhone 12 alongside the new Apple Watch and iPad, Bloomberg reports that the event will only feature the iPad and Apple Watch. The iPhone 12 will reportedly debut at another event in October.
Apple September Event
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Apple’s September event will be a virtual event, available only for viewing online, much like the WWDC 2020 event was back in June.
While the public invitation for the September event doesn’t offer any details on what will be unveiled, the version sent to the press says simply, “Time Flies.”
The September event will be live-streamed on Apple’s website, in the Apple TV app, and most likely on YouTube.
iPad Air 4
Apple is much-rumored to be developing a new “iPad Air 4” that features an edge-to-edge display. The tablet is intended to fill the slot in between the low-end $329 iPad and the top of the line iPad Pro. The new iPad Air is believed to include a Touch ID feature built into the power button. If so, it will be the first Apple device to offer such a feature.
The new Apple tablet could also offer USB-C connectivity in place of a Lightning connector.
Apple Watch Series 6
We also expect to see the announcement of the Apple Watch Series 6. While there hasn’t been a whole lot of information circling the rumor bowl, this year’s Apple Watch is expected to offer blood oxygen detection capabilities. This is due to code found in iOS 14 by 9to5Mac, which indicated Apple would be adding the feature this year.
Apple is also reported to be developing improved electrocardiogram functionality for the Apple Watch Series 6. The Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5 currently offer inconclusive ECG readings with heart rates between 100 and 120 beats per minute. A future update, either in software or hardware, is expected that will remove the limitation with an upgraded version of the ECG app.
While the Apple Watch Series 6 will certainly boast improved internals, it is expected to resemble the Series 4 and Series 5 externally.
