LG has indicated that it will add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to some 2018 smart TV models by October 2020. LCD models with “SK” or “UK” in the name and OLED models with “B8” through “Z8” in the name. The information is included in an LG support document.
While AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will be rolled out via a software update in most countries, there will be exceptions, including China, Iran, Sudan, Syria, and Venezuela.
After the update is in place, users will be able to beam content – including video, music, and photos – via AirPlay 2 from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to their LG TV, just like it already does when using an Apple TV.
The update’s HomeKit support will allow users to control their television using Siri voice commands or via the Home app on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Siri commands will allow users to play specific shows or movies via AirPlay to the LG smart set.
LG had initially planned to limit AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to 2019 and newer TV models, saying it could not “guarantee” a “seamless user experience” on older models. That resulted in over 20,000 people petitioning the company to reconsider.
LG announced previously that select 2018 smart TV models will gain access to the Apple TV app sometime this year.
