A new report suggests Apple’s upcoming “Apple Watch Series 6” will offer sleep monitoring, a blood oxygen sensor, and Touch ID, alongside the watchOS 7 update. The report also claims the Apple Watch Series 2 will not be compatible with watchOS 7.
Apple is expected to debut watchOS 7 at its virtual WWDC 2020 event in June, and the new Apple Watch is expected to debut in the fall.
Hebrew-language site The Verifier and YouTube channel iUpdate indicate watchOS 7 will finally offer support for both sleep monitoring and blood oxygen level detection. The report says the new update will include “improvements to Siri’s intelligence that will allow it to do more extension operations.”
watchOS 7 may also drop support for the Series 1 and 2. (The report mentions only the Series 2, but considering the Series 1 shares the same processor with the Series 2, it looks as if it would also be left out in the cold.)
Also to be possibly included on the Series 6 is support for LTE and Wi-Fi 6, as well as Touch ID in the Digital Crown and a larger battery, which could be important if sleep monitoring is added, as current models generally require overnight charging, making current sleep tracking methods inconvenient.
As is usual for reports like these, especially from unproven sources like The Verifier and iUpdate, they should be taken with a grain of your favorite low-sodium seasoning. Nothing is set in stone until Apple officially unveils it on stage, virtual or otherwise.
