A weekend report tells of the forced labor of ethnic Uyghurs in factories in China. The report focuses on labor conditions in Chinese factories, specifically the relocation of thousands of Muslim Uyghurs from the west Xinjiang region, to be forced into work at these factories.
The Independent reports that factories mentioned in the report include suppliers for Apple (BOE and O-Film), Nike, Dell, Volkswagen, and other big US brands.
BOE Technology produces LCD screens for Apple’s MacBooks and iPads. The manufacturer is reportedly readying to supply OLED displays for Apple’s high-end iPhones in 2021, as Apple makes moves to reduce its reliance on frenemy Samsung’s OLED manufacturing.
O-Film produces various camera modules for Apple, including selfie cameras and some rear lenses for the iPhone 11 Pro handset.
Apple released a statement saying it has strict rules about how suppliers should treat workers, expecting them to be treated with dignity and respect.
“Apple is dedicated to ensuring that everyone in our supply chain is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said spokesman Josh Rosenstock. “We have not seen this report but we work closely with all our suppliers to ensure our high standards are upheld.”
