According to a report from BGR, Google is apparently putting the rush on their latest version of Android, deliciously named “Ice Cream Sandwich”, in order to better compete with the iPhone 5.
This follows Google’s decision to rush Android Honeycomb 3.0 (their tablet version of Android, pictured above) to devices in order to compete with the iPad, and we’ve all seen how well that worked out for them.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwhich hopes to bring holographic 3D elements to the platform’s smartphone release, and to create a unified version of all of Android’s APIs that work across all Android 4.0 devices. Android’s head of engineering is calling this the “most ambitions release to date.”
So, will Ice Cream Sandwich sweep the masses off their feet? Personally, I very much doubt it. But in all honesty, I sincerely hope that it is a fantastic release that truly does challenge Apple and iOS – I’ve been waiting for years for someone to seriously step up and compete with Apple on both the tablet and smartphone front, and I hope Android 4.0 is the ticket.
Apple needs a strong competitor so iOS 6 and the iPhone 6 can be even more amazing when I’m ready to buy them!
