The Wall Street Journal says Apple’s 2019 iPhone lineup will feature three “flagship” models, 2 of which will sport an OLED screen, and 1 model with an LCD screen, similar to 2018’s lineup.
The high-end model of the “iPhone 11” lineup (the replacement for the current iPhone XS Max) will feature a triple rear camera lens system, while the iPhone XR replacement will receive a dual-lens upgrade.
WSJ says the new camera features will be a significant feature of the 2019 flagship iPhone lineup. From how the report is worded, it appears the 2019 replacement for the current iPhone XS will continue to use a dual-lens camera system, further fragmenting the iPhone lineup.
The report also claims Apple will drop the LCD display option completely in 2020, moving to an OLED-only lineup. It also mentions the removal of the pressure-sensitive component used by the iPhone’s 3D Touch feature, in a move to reduce component costs. However, it doesn’t specifically mention the removal of the 3D Touch feature, so that feature may continue, and be achieved via other methods.
WSJ also claims the Apple’s product planning for the 2019 iPhone lineup has read the point where “major features cannot be changed easily, it isn’t completed.” However, plans for the 2020 lineup are still in flux.
Last weekend, phone leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer worked with tech site Digit to release some new renderings that were said to be of the next-generation 2019 iPhone, as seen above.
As usual, reports like these are advised to be taken with a grain of your favorite salt-free seasoning. It’s still early days for iPhone 2019 rumors, and things can and will change before the device is officially unveiled this September.
