Amazon’s Alexa personal assistant, which is built-in to numerous products these days, has gained a “Follow-Up Mode” allowing users to ask multiple questions or make multiple commands, without the need to repeat the “Alexa” wakeup command.

The basic idea is simple, and obvious in hindsight. With Follow-Up Mode, Alexa will listen for 5 seconds after she’s done responding to you to see if you have anything else to ask. The blue ring on your Alexa device of choice will light up during these 5 seconds to indicate that she’s listening. If you have anything else to ask her, you can just ask it without needing to say her name first. If you don’t, she’ll just go back to sleep automatically without saying anything else.
Although you might want to include an “and” between the two commands, don’t. Instead, say the commands in the following manner. Say something like, “Alexa, turn on the front room lights,” then after that command, say “turn off the bedroom lights.” (Of course, you insert your favorite commands in place of those two examples.
Amazon says Follow-Up mode is designed so that the personal assistant responds only if a “legitimate request” is made, and ignores simple background noise Follow-Up mode won’t activate when making a call, or listening to music or an audiobook.
To turn on Follow-Up mode, go to the Settings section of your Amazon Alexa app. Tap the device you wish to enable it on, and then scroll down until you see the new “Follow-Up Mode” toggle switch. Tap the switch it to enable it.
