If you’re like me, you hate paying tolls. UGH! Especially that darned Indiana Toll Road on the way from Indianapolis to Chicago. Don’t toll roads EVER get paid for? Luckily Apple Maps has a way to plot a route for you AND avoid tolls. Sure, it might take you to L.A. via Omaha, but…
How to Turn Off Toll Roads in Apple Maps
- Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
- Tap the “Maps” menu option.
- Tap the “Driving & Navigation” menu option.
- In the “AVOID” section of the menu, tap the “Tolls” toggle button to turn it on. (It will turn green.)
From now on, any time you plan a route, Apple Maps will by default always offer you a route with no tolls. It may take you a little bit out of the way, so it’s up to you to weigh whether the new route is worth taking the time to travel.
Here’s the route from Indianapolis to a Downtown Chicago hotel with avoid toll roads turned off, (the left screen), and turned on, (the right screen).
You can see above that the route with the tolls roads will show you a dollar sign next to its route time. Hey! Look at that! the toll road route only takes 1 minute less travel time! Plus, you could use the money you save on the toll roads for a beer in the hotel’s lounge when you arrive, so this is almost a no-brainer!
