“We experienced a brief issue with the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to complete the update or contact AppleCare for help.
A number of iOS device users have reported issues when attempting to install the iOS 10 update on their device via the over-the-air method. The installation failed, effectively bricking the device, and requiring it to be plugged into iTunes to perform and update or restore. As you can imagine, this caused much consternation among users that were not near a computer.
Unfortunately, if you were hit by the problem, you will have to connect to a computer running iTunes to remedy the issue. However, if you have yet to try the OTA update, Apple says it’s safe to do so.
Again, NEVER EVER attempt an iOS update, (or a macOS update for that matter) before backing up your data. It’s easy, it doesn’t take long, and it will prevent headaches somewhere down the line!
