While most of us have been using the “iPhone 7,” and “iPhone 7 Plus” handles to refer to Apple’s still unannounced handsets, no official monikers for the new devices have as yet been announced. An new report indicates those names will indeed be used for the new handsets, and also says there will be no high-end “Pro” device offered this year.
Japanese site Mac Otakara, citing “reliable sources,” says even though this year’s iPhones will be an incremental update to the 6s and 6s Plus, Apple didn’t want to use a naming convention that includes an “s” to avoid confusion, thus making the decision to give the bestow upon the new devices the “7” designation.
“iPhone 7 Pro” was the name used in early rumors that Apple would offer a third-tier of iPhone this go-round, which would offer a dual-lens camera, in place of the single lens shooter expected in the iPhone 7 Plus. Now it appears Apple will include a dual lens camera in the iPhone 7 Plus, removing the necessity for a “Pro” model.
Mac Otakara’s report repeats a number of rumors we’ve already heard a number of times, including the omission of a 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of using the device’s Lightning connector or Bluetooth for headphones. Also mentioned is an A10 chip, a new flush, capacitive Home Button, and more.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are expected to be unveiled at a September 7th Apple event, with pre-orders kicking off on September 9th, and the devices hitting the streets on the 16th. However, a recently leaked AT&T document indicates a wide release date of September 23rd. As is usual, all of this is just conjecture, and we won’t know for sure about any of it until Apple makes an official announcement, so stay tuned.
