Among the 54 new patents that were granted to Apple on Tuesday is one patent that will be of interest to iPhone users who wonder what Apple might have in store for them in the future.
The patent, titled “Flexible Electronic Devices“, covers products that would include flexible housings and internal components, including a flexible version of an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display, reports Patently Apple.
The patent also details the use of flex-sensing components that register deformations of the device, and could thus be used as a form of user input. Possible applications of the feature could include: changing the operation mode of the device, game controls, and powering a device on or off.
Flexible devices are seen by some in the industry as the Holy Grail of mobile computing, as technology as is described in the patent could yield devices that are more resistant to possible damage resulting fromĀ dropping the device, or fromĀ other forms of impact.
