The popular VLC media player app was supposed to make the move to the Apple TV back in December, but was delayed. We’re happy to announce that as of today, the app is available in the tvOS App Store. The free download can be found in the App Store by searching for “VLC.”
Felix Kühne, lead iOS developer for VLC:
Today, we are proud to announce VLC on the Apple TV. It’s a full port of VLC media player combined with platform specific features.
VLC for Apple TV integrates with a plethora of devices and services on your local network and includes a custom way of casting files directly to the TV from your other computers using a web browser!
VLC allows users to stream audio and video files they have on network-attached storage directly to their Apple TV. VLC can stream almost any type of video or audio file without the need to first convert the file to a format usually readable by the Apple TV.
VLC can stream files from any Windows Share (SMB) servers, DLNA/UPnP-complaint media device, an FTP server or Plex servers. VLC’s Remote Playback feature allows you to stream files stored on a Mac or Windows PC merely by visiting a special URL in the computer’s web browser. (The URL is displayed on screen from within the VLC app. on the Apple TV.) Sending multiple URL’s creates a playback queue, and the videos will even be cached on the Apple TV for faster viewing access.
VLC is available free in the tvOS App Store. Search for “VLC” to find it.
