If the fourth-generation Apple TV wasn’t exactly the answer to your dreams of cord-cutting and escaping huge cable bills, Tablo, the makers of the Tablo over the air DVR have announced an app for Apple’s streaming box that might help wean you off of cable a bit. At least where local TV channels are concerned.
Tablo has unveiled a version of their streaming app for the new Apple TV. The app works in conjunctions with their DVR’s allowing users to both watch live television, and record it for later viewing.
The upfront costs are a bit dear, but in the long run, it would save you a bit of money. As well as $220 – $300 for the DVR, users will be required to pay a subscription fee of $5 per month, $50 per year, or $150 lifetime. That will allow your Tablo to continue downloading the programming schedule for your local over the air television channels. (The box includes a thirty day trial subscription with purchase. Users can continue to manually access live TV and basic recording functionality if they decide to forgo the subscription.)
And thanks to integration with Apple TV’s voice-enabled remote, Tablo also allows users to easily skip commercials simply by asking Siri to jump ahead in the stream.
Starting this spring, Tablo customers will be able to enjoy broadcast programming using both a live TV grid guide and recordings screens. Additional screens and features will be rolled out in regular post-launch updates with the goal of bringing a fully featured Tablo experience to the streaming media device of choice for Apple fans.
