August Saw Apple Gain Smartphone Marketshare in U.S.

The latest report from analytics firm comScore shows Apple is continuing to gain marketshare in the U.S. smartphone market. In the three-month period ending in August, the iPhone maker continues to pull away from second place Samsung.

Apple again ranked as the number one smartphone manufacturer with a 44.1 percent share of the market, up 0.6 percent from the end of May, according to comScore’s report published on Tuesday. The gains were in stark contrast to runner-up Samsung, which lost 1.3 points over the same period to end August with a 27.4 percent marketshare.

Rounding out the top five, LG did show some growth, with a 9.9% increase to a 9.1% share, while Motorola and HTC saw slight decreases in subscriber share, down to 4.7% and 3.4% respectively.

The Android mobile operating system continued to rank as number 1, with 51.7% of all smartphones in the U.S., that share is down 0.4 points. Apple’s iPhone saw a 0.6 point increase in U.S. marketshare, hitting 4.1%.

Microsoft, BlackBerry and Symbian filledĀ out the top five and held fairly steady with 2.9%, 1.2% and 0.1% of the market respectively.

comScore says 191.1 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones in the three-month period ending in August.
