The iOS 9 Golden Master released earlier this week, allows users to train Siri to better recognize their voice when the always-on “Hey Siri” feature is enabled.
“Hey Siri” allows users to ask Siri for information without the need to press the Home button. While the feature had previously been restricted to operating only when the iPhone was plugged into a charger, the new iPhone 6s & 6s Plus handsets – which have the new M9 motion coprocessor built-in to the main A9 processor – will allow the feature to be used anytime.
First noticed in the iOS 9.1 beta release, but also confirmed to be present in the iOS 9 GM release, the new “training” feature walks users through the process of getting Siri to recognize their voice, and not just anyone’s voice. This should prevent Siri from responding when “Hey Siri” is mentioned in a television or radio ad, or on a podcast. Or, perhaps it’s just a method of training Siri to respond better to anyone’s query. At this point, Apple hasn’t published any information on this.
Users who are running iOS 9 GM, or iOS 9.1 on their devices can find the training feature in the Settings app under “General” -> “Siri.” Tap the toggle switch marked: Allow “Hey Siri” to turn the feature on, and the new setup process will walk you through the training process. It takes just a few seconds to train Siri to recognize your voice.
