While Android devices may boast a larger install base than iOS, a new report from Clammr covering podcast listening habits reveals the iPhone is the device of choice for podcast listeners by a huge margin, with 82% of podcast listening taking place on an iPhone.

In addition, despite the vast array of third-party podcast apps available for the iPhone, the report says that over three-quarters of users listen to podcasts on the iPhone with Apple’s built-in native Podcasts app.

While the report did not break out listening via all podcast clients available on iOS, it does indicate that 78% of all podcast listening takes place using Apple’s built-in “Podcasts” app. As of iOS 8, the app is installed by default on iOS devices, likely driving much  of the usage for the app.

Apple also promotes the app in the App Store, as a search for “podcast” brings up a large ad for Apple’s own Podcasts app, while third-party competitors are pushed lower in the results.

Mobile users account for the lion’s share of listeners, with two-thirds listening on a tablet or smartphone, double the one-third of listeners joining in via a Mac or PC. 9to5Mac notes that using this information, it can be roughly calculated that iPhone users account for over half of all podcast listening.
