A widow, who just wanted to “get rid of this stuff” in an attempt to clean out her garage following the death of her husband, dropped off several boxes of electronics at a recycling company. Not realizing one of the boxes contained an Apple I computer, worth $200,000!
A South Bay recycling firm is looking for a woman who, in early April, dropped off boxes of electronics that she had cleaned out from her house after her husband died. About two weeks later, the firm, Clean Bay Area, discovered inside one of the boxes a rare find: a vintage Apple I, one of only about 200 first-generation desktop computers put together by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne in 1976.
The good news is, the recycling company, Clean Bay Area, has a policy that it gives half the proceeds from sales to the original owner. The bad news is, the woman did not leave her contact information!
Clean Bay Vice President Victor Gichun says all she has to do is show up and they’ll happily give her the $100K that is due her. Be warned, if you’re thinking about showing up and claiming you were the one who dropped off the valuable “junk,” don’t even think about it. Gichun says he personally took the boxes from her, and remembers both her face and the SUV she was driving.
