Apple Pay continues to expand the number of banks and retail establishments that have adopted the mobile payments service, as SunTrust Bank and Bi-Lo Holdings, (operator of BI-LO, Winn-Dixie, and Harveys grocery stores), have announced support for Apple’s new payments solution.
As MacTrast reported last week, BI-LO and Winn-Dixie had already rolled out unofficial support for Apple Pay, today’s announcement just makes it official, and confirms support in Bi-Lo’s Harveys locations.
Customers of SunTrust can now add their credit or debit card to Apple Pay, and use it to pay for goods and services at participating retailers and via in-app purchases. The bank, headquartered in Atlanta, has 1,497 bank branches through out eleven southern states and the Washington D.C. area.
The BI-LO, Winn-Dixie, and Harveys supermarket chains are located primarily in the southeastern part of the United States, and shoppers can now use Apple Pay on their iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets to quickly and securely pay for their grocery purchases.
“Customers want a shopping experience that is convenient, easy and secure, which is why we’re so pleased to announce support for Apple Pay,” said Bert DuMars, vice president, digital marketing at Bi-Lo Holdings. “Bi-Lo Holdings is prioritizing digital mobile solutions for our customers, and Apple Pay is an exciting first step in our journey.”
Apple Pay debuted in October as part of the iOS 8. update, and has seen a strong adoption rate since then. Apple CEO Tim Cook said earlier this month that over one million users had activated credit cards with Apple Pay in the first 72 hours following its launch.
